Here at Surf Your Name, we always enjoy taking the opportunity to create stylish and interesting new websites for more personal projects! This time, we got the chance to make a custom WordPress website for a subject near and dear to our CEO Erik, Woodbine Civic League.
Woodbine Civic League is a local neighborhood organization based in Norfolk, Virginia. It specializes in taking care of the local area and providing its’ residents with important information about the city and local services like trash pickup, ordinances, and local news. They didn’t have a website before, and they needed one to keep all of their meeting minutes, treasurer information, and schedules in an easy to access area. Here’s where we came in!
We wanted to focus on the natural beauty of the area, so we used a beautiful background for the site featuring some bright green plant life. We also wanted to highlight the coastal features of the surrounding area so we used some custom SVGs to evoke waves and some water elements. An SVG is an innovative newer image format that is really just code telling colors to fill a shape. This makes them scalable and responsive, and the possibilities are endless! One highlight of the site is a newsletter signup form which appears to be over a puddle of water. We love getting to add abstract elements like this to our sites! We also added an RSS feed to keep everyone updated on the local news. What this does is gets a list of articles from a news source in a “raw” format, and adds it to the site in a way that resembles a news ticker. It’s easy for us to add and remove news sources to this at any time if we need to. Finally, we have a very robust event calendar on the site which lets the league schedule their meetings and any other events for their neighborhood.
