At Surf Your Name, we love working with people who are passionate about what they do. Maybe that’s because we’re also passionate about what we do! Which is why, when the chance presents itself, we jump at the opportunity to work with a non-profit organization with missions that aim to help their community. The Myelin Project was no different, and our team really enjoyed getting to work with such a dedicated and caring group of individuals in order to help them work out some kinks and overall improve the functionality of their website.
The Myelin Project was established in 1989 by Augusto and Michaela Odone for their son Lorenzo who suffered from adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a rare genetic disease that deteriorates myelin in the brain and central nervous system. Although not medical doctors, the Odones went on an investigative journey into the disease and were able to develop an oil treatment that has proven to slow the progress of the disease – and they named it Lorenzo’s Oil – which has now become an internationally recognized treatment, yet still not approved by the US FDA. The organization aims to improve the quality of life for those living with ADL or AMN through research funding, raising awareness, advocation of screening for newborn babies, and providing financial support to low-income families.
When The Myelin Project’s program director, Greg Benson approached us – the organizations WordPress website was in dire need of some troubleshooting in order to enhance the effectiveness of their website. There were incorrect links, missing images and just an overall lack of functionality. Not to mention, their website wasn’t very mobile or tablet friendly. Their web design elements didn’t line up or display properly when viewing them on devices like mobile phones and tablets. The organization also needed to have an SSL installed in order to accept donations through its website. This was incredibly important because they depend on the funding from those donations to assist low-income families who are suffering through ALD or AMN.
Our team went through their WordPress website with a fine-toothed comb, fixing links and broken images, and making mobile-friendly design changes wherever possible. When it came to installing their SSL, we assisted them and made sure that everything was functioning the way it should. We also helped them with issues regarding their email marketing list – they were having spam email addresses added to their email newsletter contact list. Because we are an agency partnered with Mailchimp, we worked with them and in order to resolve this issue quickly and efficiently.
